8/25/2023 0 Comments Worst afflictions darkest dungeon![]() Plus some of the combats are timed now so if you don't defeat the enemies in an arbitrary time limit, enemies that can sometimes randomly trigger a second life prolonging the battle, YOU GET NOTHING. The core combat is very similar, except there's now a loyalty system between your characters which is also pretty random, doesn't really benefit you when it's good, and destroys you when it's bad. Plus the stops are semi-randomized, meaning often you'll stop at something that doesn't help you at all, and don't get the stops you need. The cart driving takes up nearly half of your game time, and it's really boring. Overall, I wanted to like Darkest Dungeon so much, but it just made me go back to the original for more runs.Ĭlick to shrink.Have you played it? Because it's bad. They tried to do a lot differently and they also created a completely different (but gorgeous) artstyle, but there's something so charming (is that the word?) about the original game's artstyle that I don't necessarily think it's an improvement either. I feel like Darkest Dungeon 2 wants to create those characterizations instead for you and it made me feel less attached as a result. In the first game, I cared about the characters because I mentally assigned them personalities and grew attached to specific characters based on those dungeon crawling sessions I took them on. The first game had a perfect balance of Hamlet preparation and dungeon-crawling and within that dungeon-crawling, a perfect balance of HP and Stress. I admire that they wanted the sequel to be significantly different and to expand upon ideas from the first, but the core gameplay changed in ways that I didn't exactly see people praising. Sadly, I don't think Darkest Dungeon 2 is going to come remotely close to the success that Darkest Dungeon saw. The devs also made an enemy in conjunction with a fan thru make a wish foundation, I thought this is pretty cool read. I think it's noteworthy that individual classes are more fleshed out and even have backgrounds for you to discover which also unlocks more abilities. At it's core it still is Darkest Dungeon, especially in tone, art, sometimes getting the feeling of hopelessness that makes you want to hit abandon run. It still leans heavy on the managing your party's sanity, health, diseases, etc. ![]() And you have a ton of unlocks and cross-run progression. I'd say the largest single difference is the length of a single "campaign" since DD2 a single run is a handful of hours and if your party dies you're forced to restart the run (with meta-progression carrying over). If this is a concern, you'll want to check out a gameplay/reviews to see the differences between the two. It's not a bad game by any stretch, it's just way different than the predecessor to the point that people going in with that expectation may be turned off. I loved Darkest Dungeon a whole lot more than Darkest Dungeon 2.
